Since humans have become…humans, many thousands of years ago, changes in the world and in society have always been very slow. So slow, that probably one didn’t even notice them during a life time. Every living being doesn’t like change. Take for example a cat. If for any reason you change the door mat it will avoid walking on it for the first days. So, if every animal doesn’t like change it’s no surprise that humans don’t like it as well.
However, change has become a constant in the last two-hundred years. At first it was a relatively slow change, but in the 20th century it has become a tsunami. One that was born in the era of oil lamps could die in the era of the first home computers. This is a problem for everyone, but it seems that someone is able to adapt more easily than others to these changes. Even if you think that humans are not made to adapt to fast changes like the ones we’re living, it’s quite easy in my opinion to get used to them.
This is a list of what worked for me.
- Never look back. Never ever think on how was yesterday. You can think how beautiful were the 80s, but if you think about yesterday (or the last year), you’ll never move forward.for me in this process.
- Start thinking of change as something obvious and natural. If you feel bad every time there is something new, you’ll never adapt. The iPhone has been a big improvement on the smart phones. Did you have problem learning to use it? So, the same should be for the new version of the software you use at work, or the new organization that your company has set up to better face competition.
- Never fear facing something new. People often think they’ll not be able to learn new things. They don’t want to feel inadequate, so they avoid trying new things. The truth is that you must get rid of these thoughts, and think instead that you won’t have any problems. Even if it seems something difficult, learning it it’s usually easier than one can think
I think that pretty much every blogger has written this post, so I know I’m not much original. Moreover, I come late, I should have written this at least one week ago! It doesn’t matter, no one is going to blame me for this, and in any case I’m going to write down resolutions I’ve already made.
